Understanding the Duration field
The Duration field is one of the most important fields in a service type โ and one of the most misunderstood. Here's exactly what it does:
For flat rate services: Duration ร Labor Rate = the amount billed to the customer. If your labor rate is $100/hr and duration is 2 hours, the customer is charged $200 for that service regardless of actual time worked.
For time-based services: Duration is just the estimated time used for scheduling. Billing is based on actual clocked hours, not the duration field.
For scheduling: Duration determines how long a bay or technician slot is blocked out when this service is scheduled.
โ ๏ธ Important: If you set Duration to 0 on a flat rate service, the invoice will bill $0 for labor on that service. Always set a duration that reflects the flat rate charge.
Example: You want to charge a flat $150 for a brake inspection. Set your labor rate to $150/hr and duration to 1 hour, OR set labor rate to $75/hr and duration to 2 hours. Either way, the customer sees $150 on the invoice.
Your new service type is now available to use when adding service items to work orders.
