Overview

This article explains the upcoming Parts Category Management feature that will allow shops to organize their inventory into categories and subcategories for better reporting and sales analysis. This enhancement addresses the need to track performance of specific product groups, such as analyzing tire sales by season or tracking filter inventory turnover.

Core Functionality

The new category system will provide:

  • Custom Categories: Create unlimited categories for your parts

  • Nested Structure: Build parent and child categories (e.g., Tires > Winter Tires > Passenger Winter Tires)

  • Flexible Assignment: Each part can belong to zero or one category

  • Powerful Reporting: Generate sales, inventory, and profitability reports by category

How It Will Work

Setting Up Categories

Step 1: Access Category Management

  • Navigate to Parts > Categories (beta)

  • View existing categories in a tree structure

  • Click the icon to create new ones

Step 2: Create Category Structure

  1. Add Parent Category (e.g., "Tires")

  2. Add Child Categories (e.g., "Winter Tires", "Summer Tires")

  3. Create Sub-categories as needed (e.g., under Winter Tires: "Studded", "Studless")

  4. Save your category structure

Step 3: Assign Parts to Categories

  1. Edit any part in your inventory

  2. Select category from dropdown menu

  3. Create new category on-the-fly if needed

  4. Save the part with its category assignment

OR

  1. Simply go to the Category page

  2. Drag and drop your parts into its appropriate category

  1. Keep It Simple: Start with broad categories, add detail later

  2. Be Consistent: Use similar naming conventions throughout

  3. Think Reporting First: Design categories based on how you want to analyze data

  4. Avoid Over-Nesting: 3-4 levels deep is usually sufficient

  5. Plan Before Implementing: Map out your structure before creating

Recommended Starting Categories

  • By Type: Filters, Fluids, Brakes, Suspension, Electrical

  • By Vehicle System: Engine, Transmission, Cooling, Exhaust

  • By Brand: OEM, Aftermarket Brand A, Aftermarket Brand B

  • By Profitability: High Margin, Standard Margin, Low Margin

Migration and Setup

Getting Started

  1. Plan your categories - Document your desired structure

  2. Create parent categories first

  3. Add subcategories as needed

  4. Assign high-volume parts first

  5. Gradually categorize remaining inventory
